PHILADELPHIA: A hostage standoff at a Philadelphia check-cashing store ended peacefully Friday afternoon. Posing as security guards, a group of men entered the store Friday morning and attempted to rob it, taking up to 70 people inside hostage after the place was surrounded by police. After a tense afternoon of negotiations, the captors began releasing the hostages just before 3 p.m. There were no injuries reported from the incident, but one woman who appeared shaken was carried away on a stretcher. Police believe that the robbery attempt is connected to at least three other similar crimes at other Financial...
...gallery and sang popular British songs. In "Staring World," their contribution to "Face and Figure," the pair presents us with an enormous collage of mass market postcards. The giant rectangle is filled with alternating rows of cards picturing an idyllic waterfall, crowds praying at Mecca and a fresh-faced Rob Lowe, circa 1987. "I couldn't create a big, federally funded program," says Reiner. "But I certainly can put on a show to raise awareness about how the first three years critically impact the way a child later...
...sole issue is the safety of our employees," responded Rob Doughty, a spokesman at Pizza Hut's Dallas headquarters, who accused school officials of "reacting to emotion." He says the company works out its "trade area restrictions" based on crime statistics. Nevertheless, he says, two Pizza Hut drivers have been killed on the job in the past six weeks--both in presumably safe areas. One murder occurred in Sacramento, California, the other in Salt Lake City, Utah. Regularly scheduled deliveries of the sort Pizza Hut bid on in Kansas City, Doughty claims, can be done safely with more than...
