...central issue in the seven-week trial was not just whether Goetz feared that the four youths were about to rob him but also what a "reasonable man" would do in his own defense. Only one of the four victims, Canty, actually approached Goetz and asked him for money. All four had police records, but Goetz could not know that. Two of them carried screwdrivers because they were planning to break into some video machines, but Goetz could not know that either. He could only look at them -- he said that Canty was smiling and had "shiny eyes" -- and guess...

...unremarkable without its world-class aesthetic aspirations. More than 200 architects from 15 countries entered IBA's invitational design competitions, and the winners constitute a sort of international Who's Who. West Berlin has or will soon have new IBA buildings by O.M. Ungers (West Germany), Hans Hollein (Austria), Rob Krier (Luxembourg), Mario Botta (Switzerland), Aldo Rossi (Italy), Oriol Bohigas (Spain), Rem Koolhaas (the Netherlands), James Stirling (Britain), Arata Isozaki (Japan) and, from the U.S., Charles Moore, Robert A.M. ...because I feel it's morally wrong,' he would be guilty of malpractice." Another current trial in Manhattan, involving Subway Gunman Bernhard Goetz, demonstrates the legal value of blaming victims. Goetz offers self-defense as the reason why he shot four black youths who he suspected were preparing to rob him. His attorney has relentlessly highlighted the criminal intentions of the four. The American Bar Association's code of ethics, which requires that attorneys zealously defend their clients, forbids degrading courtroom accusations only if they are also irrelevant. Formal discipline by the bar for violations is apparently rare. In essence...
