...Despair in Zimbabwe I have watched the downward spiral in Zimbabwe for more than 20 years [The World, Dec. 8]. Robert Mugabe and his gang ensured the country's downfall, and the crippling of its citizens and its political opposition to a point where no solution is possible however hard Morgan Tsvangirai works. The world leaders (including Thabo Mbeki and most political leaders in Africa) chose to ignore the real problem: Mugabe - a corrupt and possibly mentally unstable power freak. Obama reminds me a little bit of Richard Russell Jr., the longtime Senator from Georgia who - as historian Robert Caro has noted - cultivated a reputation as a thoughtful, tolerant politician even as he defended inequality and segregation for decades. Obama gave a wonderfully Russellian defense of Warren on Thursday at a press conference. Americans, he said, need to "come together" even when they disagree on social issues. Today, the Washington Times brings news that some retired military leaders are supporting William White...

...Although President George W. Bush has repeatedly said he wants to shut the Guantánamo camp, he reportedly turned down a proposal by Defense Secretary Robert Gates to bring the detainees to the U.S. And five years of cajoling European nations to take in detainees has had little success - only Albania had responded until now, accepting five Muslim Uighurs from China's Xinjiang region...

...Zimbabwe THE POLITICS OF DISEASE With cholera deaths in Zimbabwe approaching 1,000 and the country's state-run media blaming the outbreak on Western biological warfare, Britain and the U.S. have urged the U.N. Security Council to condemn President Robert Mugabe. South Africa, which has been mediating its neighbor's political stalemate but faces the threat of infection across its border, has resisted U.N. involvement, though it will give up its temporary seat on the council at the start...
