Early one morning last week, TIME Correspondents Roberto Suro and Gregory Wierzynski were ushered into the wood-paneled office of Alexander Haig for the first on-the-record interview for a U.S. magazine that the Secretary of State has given since the Inauguration. The Secretary's pace has been exhausting for days, and his eyes were red from fatigue. But he was unhesitant, almost ebullient, throughout the 45-minute interview.
