Number one singles player Sally Roberts made a belated comeback after dropping the first set 0-6, only to lose a tiebreaker and the match in her second set, 6-7.
Sally Roberts, Radcliffe's first singles player, worked her way through two rounds, but in the quarter-finals she met a hometown rival, Debbie Cambell. "I played against her for six years at home," Roberts said, "and never got more than three games from her."
Roberts and Cambell also played doubles together during those years, but this weekend they were on opposite sides of the net, and Cambell, representing Yale, prevailed, 6-2, 6-0, in a two-hour match that Roberts said had long rallies because neither player was hitting out.
