...Robin Williams comes to us these days in one of two variants--cuddly or creepy. The latter is marginally more amusing. Here, as "Sy, the photo guy," he develops not just the snapshots of a seemingly nice middle-class family but also a secret, obsessive, ultimately violent relationship with its members. Williams' passage from nerdiness to nastiness is plausibly managed. But the movie is also predictable, too pat psychologically. Its main message? Don't get too friendly with folks on the other side of the service counter. --By Richard Schickel

...each week has increased 60%, from 1.5 million to 2.4 million, in the past two years, and the network receives an average of 500,000 calls a week. "We put them on the air, and it links them with other kids who have the same opinions and feelings," says Robin Jones, director of operations. The network woos its listeners with roving vans that visit state fairs and other places where kids are likely to hang out and on-air sweepstakes with such prizes as a sleepover party at Carter's home in Key West, Fla. And, of course, it also...

...become the leading cause of mortality among people aged 15-24. Some fear that France's younger generations may prove even more reckless than their elders. "French drivers suffer from a veritable culture of irresponsibility and egotism that causes thousands of needless deaths and injuries each year," laments Jacques Robin, vice president of the League Against Road Violence. "It takes political courage and will to police and punish dangerous driving. It happens elsewhere, yet no French government has risked angering drivers by making enforcement of laws on roads and in courts a priority...

...over. The Batman of the first series personified a man on edge: cruel yet tempered by a personal sense of justice, a master of his body yet feeling the limitations of getting older, angry yet tender enough to be touched by a young girl seeking to be the new Robin. Such nuance has vanished in "DK2," undoing all the vulnerability Miller invested in the character. Batman has gone back to his old one-dimensional self, except now he has a Machiavellian streak...
