...lost 24 of them since starting a medically supervised all-liquid diet three weeks ago). As interviewers go, she is no match for, say, Phil Donahue, whose program was the obvious model for hers. What she lacks in journalistic toughness, however, she makes up in plainspoken curiosity, robust humor and, above all, empathy. Guests with sad stories to tell are apt to rouse a tear in Oprah's eye or get a comforting arm around the shoulder. They, in turn, often find themselves revealing things they would not imagine telling anyone, much less a national TV audience...

Since Mayer's last outing, a robust greenback has grown anemic, the U.S. has become the world's largest debtor, and the stock market dropped more than 500 points in one day, symbolically if not literally ending the avaricious '80s. The high point is Cymbeline, with its Spielbergian supernatural touches (ghosts appearing in dreams, Jupiter descending from the heavens) and robust battles. In one chilling scene, two panels of the back wall bang open to reveal opposing armies about to pour onto the stage. The most impressive coup de theatre, however, belongs to Star Tim Pigott-Smith, a specialist in complex villains. He invades the bedroom of a sleeping princess, robs...
