Weezer, the mid 90s staple in alternateen garage rock, has returned in its alter-ego form, The Rentals, and this time the results are promising. In Seven More Minutes, headman Matt Sharp convincingly demonstrates a wealth of creativity and originality underutilized in his subdued role as bassist and back-up vocalist for Weezer. Most of what passes for pop swing these days is content simply to give off heat. Retro acts like the Brian Setzer Orchestra, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Cherry Poppin' Daddies create swing that owes more to rock than jazz; it's propelled by attitude, sometimes fueled by electric guitars and focused more on excitement than enlightenment.
