...great singer (her intonation is sometimes uncertain), her songs too often sound alike (a slight melody with a plucky bass), and she is no longer an independent-label secret (she just appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone). Yet there is something so vital and appealing about this Chicago rocker that it's hard not to admire her. Not many singer-songwriters manage to be so honest and so much fun at the same time...
...professed ideals of many of the musicians who played there. The roster included such "alternative" groups as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Porno for Pyros and Candlebox, which are supposed to be anti-commercialism. Some top alternative acts, such as Pearl Jam, rejected invitations to appear at Saugerties, as did rocker Neil Young, another of those who played the first Woodstock. The morals vs. money debate raged among fans. "I refuse to participate in something I believe is nothing more than making money off people's lust for the past," said graduate student Tony Novosel, 41, in a message sent over...
Coed bands are creating some of the most interesting music around. Frente!'s debut, Marvin the Album, offers up incongruously ear-caressing melodies on harsh subjects ranging from El Salvador to manic depression. Hole's Live Through This features primal guitar riffs and high-IQ lyrics by Courtney Love (rocker Kurt Cobain's widow). Arrested Development's brand-new CD, Zingalamaduni, is smart, political hip-hop (one song deals with abortion). Says lead rapper Speech: "It's important to get men and women expressing themselves about issues together." Steve Yegelwel of Atlantic/Seed Records, a label with several coed bands, says...
...with people and the plot of the movie stank like rotten eggs, I was pleased with the performances of Chris Farley and Adam Sandler. Both Saturday Night Live regulars made the movie bearable and actually pretty funny at times. In one scene Farley rips an earring off a rebel rocker and, well, let's just say the earring was not attached to the metalhead's ear. Sandler was charming with his portrayal of a stupid drummer for the Lone Rangers band. Much unlike Sandler, Brendan Fraser ("School Ties" and "With Honors") is pathetic as lead singer Chazz. He does...
...Tower of Power Horns, and Rose Stone (formerly of the funk great, Sly and the Family Stone). Without the horns, the song seems to lose some of its texture and color, but the live setting allows the jam at the end of the song to flourish into a true rocker. Anastasio seized the opportunity and delivered a blistering but passionate solo. Closing out the second set with the crowd-pleaser "Golgi Apparatus," a tune Anastasio wrote in eight grade, Phish had the throngs of prep school kids singing along to the chorus "I saw you with a ticket stub...
