...races last week, Ford monopolized the entries, as everybody expected, and speeds were a few m.p.h. slower. Did that kill the excitement? Hardly. In a 100-mile qualifying race, Florida's Rod Eulenfeld blew an engine going into the east turn at 160 m.p.h. His 1963 Ford caromed off the retaining wall, skidded 200 yds. on its top and burst into flames. Before anyone could bat an eye, the track was covered with slewing, sliding cars, piling into each other. Eleven were more or less reduced to junk, but, incredibly, nobody was seriously injured...
...numerous species of traps use ingenious methods to cover the insects imprisoned in the blossom with the sticky pollen that they carry to the flower's close-at-hand female sex organ as they try to escape. After a night inside the Aaron's-rod flower, mosquitoes find themselves literally snowed under by pollen, while flies caught by the lily-like arms of another trap flower must wade through mounds of pollen to move from one part of the caldron to another. The curved hollow of the purplish-green Dutchman's-pipe is pocked on the inside...
...half of the title represents the time allotted to a forward looking Nazi shrink (Rod Taylor) for extracting Allied invasion plans from an American intelligence officer (James Garner). If this new-fangled ploy founders, Garner gets turned over to the pudgy S.S. man waiting...
...characters tangled up in it are a fairly standard crew. Unfortunately, once the puzzle has fallen into place, the movie goes to pieces. Hero Garner and Collaborator Saint plow doggedly through the rubble to discover anew that there is nothing like a tight squeeze for bringing people together, while Rod Taylor, as a Nazi medico imbued with Yankee sportsmanship, reveals that he became a menace only to serve mankind. In the frayed formula ending, Writer Seaton has sabotaged his outlandish melodrama, like a man who strides into battle armed with a formidable secret weapon and hobbles out brandishing a mere...
...then: "It is vestigial in the carnivorous septibranch bivalves"; what, have not the carnivorous septibranch bivalves their own vivacious style? "The style is present in only those herbivorous gastropods which feed by cilia or by slow radular action; in archeogastropods (e.g., Lunella) the style is mucus rod"; will Lunella tolerate such a slur? "Carnivorous snails have no style." The last straw...
