Charles G. Dawes appeared last week in the role of a stickler for Senate rules. In the Chamber senators are supposed to address themselves only to the Chair and to refer to One another in the third person. The press has noted of late that there has been some laxity in this respect. But last week Senator Watson was asking a question of Senator Fess. Senator Watson's desk is in the front row, third from the centre aisle. Senator Fess' desk is in the fourth (rear) row, eighth from the aisle (nearly directly behind Mr. Watson's because...
...Sainted Mother Marie." A strapping Italian youth enacted the role of Mme. Mesmin, the notorious "Sainted Mother Marie," chief flagellant of the Sadistic order of Notre Dame Des Pleurs, which has flourished for 21 years at Bordeaux, France. Attired in a "mother hubbard" and brandishing a knotted rope end, he led the ballet of 20 young men similarly costumed, with their lips painted, their cheeks rouged, their eyebrows plucked...
...course it is difficult in a week to learn completely a whimsical, unusual role. Styxian cynics are odd people, not too easy to portray. Nor are vicars on the longest of vicars' vacations. But Mr. Cannon realizes the Barriesque quality in the play with delightful results. William Duke, who wants a "keen" world, who likes his vicarship with lambent sincerity, who knows enough of life to misunderstand death--he is exact and competent, more so than can usually be expected in stock productions with red asbestos curtains and singleton orchestras. Miss Newcombe as the formidable Mrs. Clivedon-Banks; Miss Ediss...
Louis Hall entered into the enviable role of Captain, forgetful, superhuman, old gargoyle of a man, with extraordinary understanding and carried the play on his shoulders in many places. The second character part of note, that of Mazzini Dunn, an elusive, kindly, never-get-rich old fellow who had the honor to be Ellie's father, was admirably filled by Horace Pollock. And Ralph Roberts stole a large slice of the second act from under the noses of the rest of the cast with his Cockney dialect and the little playlet all his own, a gift from Shaw...
After several preliminary try-outs last week a tentative cast for the Hasty Pudding show has been chosen. Scott Wilson '27, whose impersonation of the leading lady was the distinguishing feature of last year's show, will again appear in that role. The other important feminine parts will be filled by C. S. Gross '27, C. B. Lyon '27, and J. O. Rosecrans '27. Gross and Wilson are particularly noted for their skill and grace in various forms of specialty dancing. F. M. Eaton '27 and N. S. Hess '27 will take the chief male parts...
