Long brings some unique gifts to his role. At 59, he has been in the Senate for just under half of his life (29 years) and is a master of its parliamentary maz es. His intellectual powers are impressive ?he can deliver a brilliant 30-minute speech after just five minutes of briefing ?and his homespun metaphors cut right through economic obfuscation. Pressed by Senate liberals on tax reform last year, Long responded with a scathing definition: "Tax reform means 'Don't tax you, don't tax me. Tax that fellow behind the tree.' " In the Senate club...

...sense, Leakey was born for his role. From the age of six months, he was taken on expeditions with his famous parents and learned to recognize fossils almost before he could talk. His childhood conversations were filled with the anatomical, geological and biological jargon of anthropology. It is probably no coincidence that the director cast Truffaut, the kindest of film makers, in a leading role, for Spielberg's sensibility matches that of such Truffaut films as The Wild Child and Small Change. Close Encounters' charm is enhanced by the performances as well: Dreyfuss, Truffaut and Dillon bring warm coloring to roles that are rather sketchily set forth in the script. The actors' eyes are lit with a touch of madness, just enough to suggest...
