...friend of a friend, I got my hands on a play called In Between O'Clock by Michael Ragozzino 01. I read it in one blast (now if only I could do that with my other reading) It's a wicked little existential story with a fantastic lead role (Mike wrote the play as an independent study with mentor Adrienne Kennedy, award-winning playwright and Harvard professor) and I'm entirely curious as to how something so thoughtful on page will effectively reach an audience. Oooooh. Ohhhhhh. The buzz is hot, I thought. I approached Mike and played it cool...

...Part of this believability comes from the strength of the acting. Tobey Maguire plays Homer perfectly. He bings an ideal mix of innocence and naivete to the role, but he also imparts a mature intelligence gained during his days in the orphanage. Homer might be innocent, but he certainly can't be labeled stupid. When dealing with expectant mothers, he learns to read between the lines and sense what's really going on behind the expressions on people's faces...

...script is subtle and complex, and this production takes full advantage of its depth. Nor is it one-sided: as we learn from a ten-year correspondence (often wonderfully interactive on stage) between Karen and Bibi, Karen feels stifled by the oppressive Chinese regime that imposes the role of a "good citizen" on its people at the expense of the individual. Karen feels like "a beautiful bird in a cage" whose colors will never be seen nor its song heard. Reading about America and the freedom allowed in the West in books sent by Bibi only makes Karen more depressed...
