...Hamburg State Opera under the guidance of Impresario Rolf Liebermann has developed into one of the most creative companies in the world. An opera composer himself (Penelope, School for Wives), Liebermann commissions two new operas a year, lets producers and directors follow their own imaginative flights. Currently, two new productions - a brilliant revival of Mozart's The Magic Flute and the premiere of Gian Carlo Menotti's first major stage work in five years - are proving the wisdom of such artistic generosity...

...TACKLES: Joe Greene, North Texas State, 6 ft. 4 in., 274 Ibs.; and Rolf Krueger, Texas A & M, 6 ft. 4 in., 240 Ibs. Pumping his arms and legs like pistons, Greene is a kind of fearsome onesome. Says one scouting report: "He's tough and mean and comes to hit people. Good killer instincts. Mobile and hostile." The consensus on Krueger is that he is "a natural." The speculation is that Steiner was fired because the Biafran military had grown increasingly jealous of his privileged position with Colonel Odumegwu Ojukwu and had done their best to see that Steiner...

Record Supplies. Last week the Fourth Commandos were once more rebuilding under the command of a German-born ex-Foreign Legion sergeant who became a sector commander for the S.A.O. (Secret Army Organization) in Algeria and then a colonel for Ojukwu in Biafra. He is Rolf Steiner, and he considers the war to be far from lost, contemptuously dismissing the territorial gains of the heavily armed Nigerians. "If any corporal serving under me in the Legion had taken more than a week to conquer West Africa with their kind of equipment," he snorts, "I'd have him shot...

...Lord Chamberlain concentrate on his other duties, such as arranging Buckingham Palace garden parties and caring for the royal swans. In London's West End, arrangements are now being made to bring back such once banned plays as Jean-Claude van Itahe's America Hurrah and Rolf Hochhuth's Soldiers. "We are at last released from the tyranny of the theatrical leaseholder," says Osborne dryly. "There will probably be a quick rash of hairy American filth, but it shouldn't threaten the existence of cheerful, decent, serious British filth...
