...recorded years of Sicily's history read like a roll call of invaders-Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Carthaginians, Byzantines, Vandals, Saracens, Normans, Spaniards, Garibaldi and his red-shirted Thousand, the Allies of World War II. Last week the 4,500,000 inhabitants of the biggest island in the Mediterranean were subjected to a fresh invasion. This one was noisy but peaceable, consisting of a stream of orating visitors from the Italian mainland. The attraction was not Sicily's resources or its harshly lovely geography, but its political loyalties. As a semi-autonomous region of the Italian Republic, Sicily...
Boeing, which has already built some 30 of the giant planes, and is turning them out at the rate of one a week, will speed up production at both its Seattle and Wichita, Kans. plants. Originally, Boeing had planned to roll the first B-52 out of Wichita early next year, build up to a rate of 2½ planes a week. After the roll call, there was a long delay, while Democrats switched their votes, some from nay to aye, some from nay to present. Martin, annoyed at the procedure, demanded: "W'hat's the stalling for?" Speaker Rayburn gently replied that there had been no unnecessary delay. Then he carefully studied the Democratic side to make certain he had no more...
...everywhere. City-bred Herbert Mor rison, the party's No. 2, headed for Lancashire with his bride, a Lancashire lass, to try his cockney wit in a strategic voting area where he can now claim kinship. Rebel Rouser Aneurin Bevan careened through the industrial towns and docksides to roll his rich Welsh voice behind Bevanite candidates and Bevanite notions. In a manner reminiscent of days gone by, when he likened the Tories to "vermin," Nye got off to an impish start by likening the Tories to the biblical Gadarene swine. ("I would rather move in a herd," replied Tory...
