Jones’ short life was a rock and roll archetype, perfect fodder for a movie full of beautiful women, glamorous drugs, and destructive arguments. “Stoned” is set in the final tumultuous months of Jones’ life, a time during which he withdrew into the private world of his Sussex mansion. He essentially abandons the band for the companionship of his girlfriend, Anna Wohlin (Tuva Novotny, “Bang Bang Orangutang”) and the renovator of his house, Frank Thorogood (Paddy Considene, “Cinderella Man”). This period...

...explores the lives of the directionless and dissatisfied. With his knack for storytelling, Roberts takes after iconic singer-songwriters like John Lennon and Bob Dylan, whom he credits as his influences. "I'm trying to make my contribution to the great tradition of rock 'n' roll," he says, adding that it's a "lofty goal." He's already proved himself sharper than most...

Perhaps those who saw the trailer didn't realize that this was the one flight, of the four hijacked that day, with an inspiring ending. This was the one on which the good guys, following passenger Todd Beamer's John Wayne--like invocation, "Let's roll," foiled the bad guys. The saga of this flight makes for, in 9/11 terms, a feel-good movie. Hynes, who shot a 74 on his way to a top-10 finish. “Having done this for four years, I can kind of roll with the punches a little bit better than some guys,” Hynes said. “I’ve played two tournaments a year at Yale, so I have some more course knowledge than a lot of the guys.” Junior Tom Hegge came in with...

...television, it already has. American Idol, beneath the contestants' naked ambition and buckets of flop-sweat, and Simon Snide's eviscerating bitchiness, is reacquainting the country with its glorious musical past. One week, everyone must sing a Cole Porter tune; the next, '50s rock 'n roll is the genre. All right, the performers don't take their vocalizing cues from the swingin' precision of Ella Fitzgerald, the hiccupping innocence and intensity of Buddy Holly. Instead, they sound indentured to the wildly mannerist melodramatics of Mariah Carey and Michael Bolton. ("Just sing the damned song," my friend George Grizzard has been...
