...report reveals that in 1986 Rome had an income of $57.3 million and expenses of $114 million. The biggest cost was $50.6 million to pay 2,315 employees. ...Rome was able to cover the huge 1986 shortfall by using the full $32 million from the "St. Peter's Pence" collection, taken in parishes around the world to support the papacy. Also applied was $24.7 million that had been held over from previous Pence collections, nearly wiping out those reserves. The deficit would have been worse if Rome had not dipped into endowments for $3.5 million. What resources the Holy See will use to cope with the 1987 deficit have not been revealed...
