...other runners sniggered when they saw Abebe Bikila turn up at the start of the Olympic marathon with no shoes. As a television camera scanned the scrum of athletes readying themselves for the starter's gun, a commentator asked: "And what's this Ethiopian called?" It was 1960, Rome. The book, just out in paperback, makes liberal use of fictionalizing devices - interior monologues, imagined conversations - that render it less reliable as a historical account, but help to capture the drama of Bikila's life. There's little disagreement over Petrella's acts as a member of the extreme-left Red Brigades, which battled Italian governments in the 1970s and 1980s in a campaign of assassination, kidnapping, and terror. In 1992 a Rome court convicted Petrella in absentia for her role in the 1981 murder of a police inspector and the kidnapping of a judge. The following year, Petrella fled to France...

...Earlier this year Epic Records, a division of Sony, scoured Europe for clergymen with the chops to record a Latin Mass album. Word of mouth led them to the trio, who started singing together 35 years ago at a Belfast boarding school, and later performed at their seminary in Rome. After hearing a demo tape, Nick Raphael, the managing director of Epic in the U.K., raced to sign them. "Is any one of them a potential Elvis Presley or Frank Sinatra? Probably not," he says. "Do they have the potential to be one of the world's biggest musical acts...
