...with Mussolini strikes a balance between the humor and emotional acuity in the setting of a coming-of-age movie, in this case the coming of age of Luca. The film engages the audience's sympathy without being mawkish. Unlike Zeffirelli's immensely popular 1961 production of Romeo and Juliet, Tea with Mussolini does not pander to a specific audience. It manages to convey the struggles and foibles of its characters with economy of sentiment and love...

When was the last time we had a straight adaptation of a play by William Shakespeare? After DiCaprio's mumbled Romeo and Branagh's adulterated Hamlet, director Michael Hoffman has fashioned a surprisingly faithful version of Shakespeare's fairweather fantasy A Midsummer Night's Dream...

Happily, this adaptation hasn't gone the way of others featuring beautiful blonde heroines (think Great Expectations). While iambic pentameter usually complicates dialogue enough to make directors resort to other narrative devices (dance in West Side Story and gaudy cinematography in Baz Luhrman's Romeo and Juliet), Hoffman's production miraculously retains both the language and the humor of the original version. ...royalties have skyrocketed much as Jane Austen's did a few years ago as every Hollywood producer scrambles to make good on the success of Oscar hit "Shakespeare in Love." To be sure, that comedy misappropriated a few of the sonnets for dramatic purposes, but it brought lines from "Romeo and Juliet" to the screen and was filmed on a set similar to the Bard's old haunt, The Globe Theatre, recently rebuilt in London. "A Midsummer Night's Dream," a serious effort at bringing an entire play of Shakespeare's--lines and all--to the screen is scheduled...
