Perched on a high, verdant ridge at Saint Paul de Vence above Nice, the museum is the elegantly terraced product of José Luis Sert, dean of Harvard's Graduate School of Design. Its ochre fieldstone walls blend into the slope; atop the roof, flying scoops shaped like quarter-cylinders trap the harsh Mediterranean light, diffuse it through milky glass, and bounce it off vaults inside to soften it further. Six galleries are devoted respectively to Bonnard, Giacometti, Kandinsky, Chagall, Braque and Miró; the paintings are from Maeght's collection or gifts from the artists...
TRAVELERS INSURANCE. Under the red-umbrella roof is a walk-through exhibit that portrays the history of man with arrested-action scenes showing cavemen painting on walls, Roman gladiators in bitter battle, the bubonic plague decimating a medieval city...
BELL SYSTEM. Inside the building, plopped beside the Fountain of the Planets like an upside-down flatiron, a soothing voice says "Fasten your seat belts and adjust your earphones." The floor seems to churn, the roof to fall as the chair-ride jogs along into a spooky tunnel where the spectator sees a 3-D drama on communications. The exhibits include Picturephones on which you see whomever you talk...
Kathie Amatniek '64, L. Geoffrey Cowan '64, and Claude Weaver '65 were staying in the home of Robert J. Miles, a Panola County civil rights leader, when the incident occured. A car drove up in front of the house, someone got out and threw a grenade on the roof. The car sped away as Cowan, Miles, Weaver, Miss Amatniek, and two other COFO workers ran out of the house to escape the fumes...
