Since Mem Hall has never been cleaned before, the project will be quite extensive. The stonework on the roof and walls needs repair, the stained glass windows need cleaning, and missing parts have to be replaced...
Even the most mild mannered of these new movies, Withnail and I, is a shock to our expectations. American literati are, after all, conditioned to share the Lake poets' faith in the restorative powers of the pastoral: the thatch tight on the cottage roof, the peat glowing on the grate, the cattle posing for a painting by Constable. The vision is especially poignant if you are as deeply down as was the "and I" of the title (played by Paul McGann) and as angrily out as his roommate Withnail (Richard E. Grant) when they were aspiring actors in London...
...feet before plunging. In the cockpit, a computer- generated voice repeated the words "stall . . . stall," indicating that the airflow over the wings was no longer sufficient to lift the plane; the jet was falling, not flying. Traveling at about 215 m.p.h., the plane knocked a jagged piece off the roof of a rental-car building and then ricocheted off the embankment of an access road to Interstate 94. Can it be that America now has too many museums -- and that the Terra Museum is a sign that the saturation...
...Menil is a two-story building some 400 ft. long, clad on the outside with wide-board gray swamp cypress in a white steel frame. Inside, there are black-stained pine floors, and curved concrete louvers that admit a changing wash of daylight through most of the roof. It is plain and delicate, and it sits in its frame-house district of Houston with a perfect sense of context -- which is no surprise, since the Menil Foundation owns most of the houses around it, all of which have been painted the same warm gray. (Gray is to Dominique de Menil...
