...Valencia's new opera house [Feb. 26]: My husband and I have been to four performances at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía. We can understand why people are dazzled by the hall's "curved walls, rolling stairways; turquoise reflecting pools topped by a detached, featherlike roof." Artistic quality is indeed high, and the acoustics are excellent. Each seat is equipped with a small screen allowing you to see the libretto in one of several languages. When TIME visited the scene of the raid-a run-down former administrator's House at Same, about 50km south of Dili, which the rebels took over on Feb. 26-Australian soldiers were still manning checkpoints on nearby access roads. Parts of the building's roof had been blown off, apparently by the downdraft from the two Black Hawk helicopters used in the raid, and there were bullet holes in some trees along nearby roads. ...While that's good news for China's economy, environmentalists are worried. The Tibet plateau, known as the Roof of the World, is an average of 15,000 feet above sea level and is home to rare snow leopards and Tibetan antelope. Much of it is largely untouched. "At that high altitude, the ecosystem is very fragile. Once you damage it will takes decades to recover," says Wen Bo, China program director for Pacific Environment, a San Francisco-based NGO. "Already the plateau is facing serious problems. If you're going to mine it's not going to get better...
