During the April recess a drinking fountain was built in the main hallway of the Union towards the Periodical Room. The fountain is a memorial to Thomas Simms Bettens '74 and bears the following inscriptions: "He taught the classics with distinction for twenty-eight years in a secondary school in New York City and won the respect and affection of his pupils by his cheerful patience, justice, and hopeful sympathy.
