Rows of seats are preferred over a conference table becauses they accommodate large classes. But the practice of moulding educational techniques to the capacity of available class rooms is hardly worthy of America's wealthiest University. Professors who find undergraduates incapable of benefitting from the conference method fail to understand that discussion cannot begin spontaneously after 45 minutes of one-way communication. Participation must be fostered, and it needs mechanical encouragement in room design...
...basement room of a Third Avenue gallery last week hung the second Manhattan exhibition of contemporary Haitian art. Done by houseboys, chauffeurs and voodoo drummers in their spare time, the paintings were as uninhibited as they were crude. Their bright automobile-enamel colors and outlandish but occasionally forceful draftsmanship looked good to many a critic, for they made a pleasant and refreshing contrast with the alfalfa-dry fare ground out by most professional moderns. But he does not see why one particular hour is the magic dividing line between right and wrong...
Second, until a change is voted, some arrangements should be made by House Committees for the entertaining of women guests, at least on weekends, after individual rooms are official closed. Winthrop and Lowell, for example, allow use of one Common Room for such purposes. Admittedly Common Rooms are lacking in "atmosphere" and, in many eases, proper planning within the House would help. Proper planning within the House could avoid conflicts with groups using the rooms for meetings...
