...Woodward and Bernstein, however, have become a woman television reporter and cameraman, and instead of bringing down a president, they're hot on the trail of a near-disaster at a nuclear power plant that almost destroyed Southern California. They've even found a new "Deep Throat": a control-room supervisor at the plant who fears that the accident may happen again, and go out of control. The result is a race against the clock, against the utility company that runs the plant, and against the television station manager who wants to avoid controversy at any cost. The film...

...bearded, aggressive, ex-radical for whom the sixties never ended, who cracks jokes about the nuclear shit hitting the fan and the plant exploding. While the plant's P.R. man (James Hampton, a veteran of T.V.'s "F-Troop" and "Rockford Files") proudly displays the space-age control room from the bird's eye perspective of the visitor's gallery, the shit indeed hits the fan. The building shakes, buzzers blast, and control panel lights flash like a Christmas tree gone beserk. Douglas surreptitiously films the panic unfolding below him, focusing on the contorted face of supervisor Jack Godell (Jack...

...police, city officials, and media to the complaints of black residents are not without precedent. On February 7, the day the fourth black victim was discovered, scuffling and fighting between black and white students broke out in racially tense Hyde Park High School. The fight began in one room at 10:30 a.m. and quickly spread. Thirty minutes later, all the white students were evacuated by the police and school officials, while the black students were kept in class to "simmer down." Since Hyde Park High is 40 per cent white, black parents wondered why the white students were considered...

...laugh-at-a-real-moron role he is given. But George Melrod--easily the star of the show--as "Nick, Sam Nick", the detective, is the quintessential Columbo parody, from that cultivated unshaven look to his rapid-fire delivery. Nicks' exchange with Natalie in the interrogation room is really the funniest scene in the show; it makes you forget that he can't sing. Jay Bacal as the broker is aggressively mediocre, weighed down by an insecure voice and a struggle to fight his repetitive style. His secretary, Miss Zweig (Ellen Zachos) has to grapple with a woman's role...

...Alceste is miscast and the weak lead seriously disables this Misanthrope. The show lacks pacing and modulations of tone. Alceste's non-stop bombast ruins Moliere's clever commentary on the futility of one sincere idealist's battle against a self-deceiving world. The Misanthrope is a drawing-room comedy, and this version still needs a little work back at the drawing board...
