...dead and hundreds injured. On Jan. 11, President Iajuddin Ahmed, presumably with the backing of the army, called a state of emergency, imposed night curfews across the country and postponed the elections indefinitely. An interim government promises to revamp the compromised election commission, fix dodgy electoral rolls and root out corruption. Just don't expect an election anytime soon...
Your article overemphasized the lack of democracy in China, leading to speculation about possible global catastrophe and war. Democracy can't be imposed on a nation, however; it must evolve to take root and endure. China has come a long way from the feudal regime it was only 100 years ago, and it will reach democracy on its own terms. China's strategy to meet its demand for natural resources is entirely peaceful. Fierce competition for natural resources does not preclude international cooperation. Maybe China will align its strategies with the U.S.'s if the U.S. stops interfering in China...
Lacking provincial venues, English opera took root in the grand country house in the 1930s, and it has evolved into a ritual involving evening dress, a gourmet picnic and a sense of exclusivity. Almost seven years ago, Vilayanur Ramachandran, head of the Center for Brain and Cognition at the University of California at San Diego, went so far as to declare that "mirror neurons will do for psychology what DNA did for biology: they will provide a unifying framework and help explain...
...bombs and pure-evil bad guys make for exciting TV. Working patiently to improve America's image in the Muslim world--not so much. (Maybe Aaron Sorkin could spice it up with an office romance and lots of walk-and-talks.) Muddy a terrorism thriller with liberal concern over root causes and you get Syriana, whose plot audiences couldn't follow with a GPS device. "The politics of the show," says executive producer Howard Gordon (a registered Democrat), "are narrative politics...
