There was yet another inning of sand-lot summetry, Plains, Ga.-style last week, when Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin, 68, dropped in on former President Jimmy Carter, 56, and his wife Rosalynn, 54. There to greet his arrival was a crowd of some 1,500, many of them children in yarmulkes, shouting "Shalom!" Begin and Carter seemed outwardly cordial, despite past frustrations over their differences. Said Joel Arnon, Israeli consul general in Atlanta: "They are two strong personalities who both believe they have a direct line...

Jimmy Carter, 56, on a 1½-week tour of China, dined with Premier Zhao Ziyang, cycled with commuters and displayed Sherpa-like stamina by scampering up and down the steeper sections of the Great Wall as Wife Rosalynn and former Press Secretary Jody Powell, 37, gasped for breath. At a tête-à-tête with Deng Xiaoping, 77, in the Great Hall of the People, Carter told the Chinese Senior Vice Chairman, "If you had been my running mate in the last election, we would have won again." So much for Walter What...

The reunion was all harmony and grits. Out on the old softball field, with Rosalynn and Jehan looking on, Jimmy presented Sadat with a glass sculpture of a laurel wreath. Sadat was at his gracious best, although Carter's detractors will doubtless delight in misconstruing his words. Said he: "Jimmy Carter has left his fingerprints on the history...

...days. "I am settling into a fairly regular routine," he writes, "rising quite early, working at the remarkable word-processing machine until daylight, running two or three miles and later during the day continuing to work on the book several hours." The down-home updater also includes domestic news. Rosalynn, 53, "has almost gotten our home liveable and will soon begin her own book." Chip, 31, "is taking care of our farms and our business affairs," and Amy, 13, "is going to a very good school about 20 minutes away." In fact, the former President seems downright hooked on Plains...

...whammy number. Her classic use of this tactic was with the Jimmy Carters, insisting that she felt just too embarrassed even to bring up her next question, until Carter, to put her at ease, begged her to go ahead, and-wham!-found himself obliged to discuss whether he and Rosalynn slept in single beds or a double bed in the White House. Walters can talk sense with Sadat, but at other times can ask the most banal of fan magazine questions: "What was your biggest thrill?" Her best performances must occur offscreen, when by exerting charm or power or both...
