Amiable Idiots. In The Fifth Wheel, Climax (Thurs. 8:30 p.m., CBS) seemed to have an engaging little item. It was made up of a couple of crooks, a couple of priests, the Never Worry Finance Co., a magenta automobile that one of the priests calls Rosey, and $35,000 in cash, robbed from a bank, that the crooks have hidden in Rosey's spare tire. Unfortunately, neither the author, the director nor the actors seemed to realize that the strength of farce rests on credibility and surprise. The incidents that were not predictable were unbelievable, and both crooks...

...Louis Marx, arrived recently at the Fort Myer, Va. quarters of General Omar Bradley for a visit with their star-studded godfathers. Result: a medley of big names and a remarkable godfather-godson picture. The host posed in the background with the Air Force's Major General Emmett ("Rosey") O'Donnell. On a couch sat Dwight Eisenhower holding Spencer Bedell Marx, 3½. Under Secretary of State Lieut. General Walter Bedel! Glossy and tinseled, the two features now playing at Loew's State and Orpheum are both based on a primer book conception of American life, a rosey landscape which precludes the appearance of any squalor or the portrayal of any emotional conflict. Each movie was denuded of dramatic meat for a different reason. One, a propaganda-type film scheduled for release around Brotherhood Week, was sterilized to make the American flag shine more brightly. The main feature, The Belle of New York, is a musical and therefore should not need any dramatic merit...
