Albert Benjamin ("Happy") Chandler, the sometimes clownish governor of Kentucky and the first announced candidate for President of the U.S. in 1960, has his faults-but racial demagoguery has never been one of them. Under Chandler the number of integrated school districts in Kentucky rose to 92 (out of 217) by the end of the 1956-57 school year, and Louisville became a model of its kind. Last week seven more Kentucky districts began integration-including coal-mining Union County, where a Sturgis (pop. 2,300) mob last year turned away Negroes trying to enroll in high school...
...legal precedents that apply to Orval Faubus v. the U.S. reach all the way back to a September night during the Revolutionary War when a Connecticut fisherman named Gideon Olmstead, two seamen and a boy, imprisoned aboard the British sloop Active, rose up and overpowered 14 British sailormen and captured the ship for the 13 states. Couple of days later the heroes were themselves chased, caught and captured, not by the British but by the armed brig Convention, in the service of Pennsylvania. They were hauled into the port of Philadelphia, where the admiralty court ordered the vessel sold...
Costs & Carloads. Like many another industry, the roads have paid out a lot more in 1957 to take in a little less. While operating revenues declined only one-tenth of 1% in the first six months, operating expenses rose by $73 million, or 1.8%. Inflation's mischief hit the railroads where it hurts most-in wages, which account for 63% of all operating costs. Though the railroads actually trimmed more than 56,000 employees from their payrolls during the past year, they paid 12.5% more in wages, hiked payrolls by nearly $28 million. The railroads were also hard...
...Department of Agriculture last week had some startling figures that might put all the worryabout fluctuating farm prices and immediate income in clearer perspective. The U.S. farmer is a rich man. Between Jan. 1, 1956 and Jan. 1, 1957, total agricultural equities (all assets minus all liabilities) rose by $8 billion to an all-time high of $157.3 billion. In every single category, farmers increased their net worth. Livestock values rose almost 5%, machinery 3%, household goods more than 4%. Even farmers' cash deposits, bond holdings and other investments grew bigger, in some categories as little...
