DIED. Eben Roy Alexander, 79, TIME'S managing editor for a record length of time, eleven years (1949-60); of pneumonia; in Roslyn, N.Y. A graduate of St. Louis University who served in the Marine Corps during World War I, Alexander worked for the St. Louis Star for four years and for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for 14, eventually becoming assistant city editor. He came to New York City and TIME as a writer in 1939.
