Rotary traffic, which has been in operation since last spring was abandoned yesterday by order of Chief of Police Timothy H. Leahy. The new system had been considerably criticized by many people including Harvard Square merchants, who claimed that trade was lost by it.
Leahy claimed that traffic would always be congested in the Square because of the presence of the subway station and had recommended to Mayor John D. Lynch that the rotary traffic be discontinued.
