Half Disestablished. What gives the Tate its latter-day prestige is Director Rothenstein, 62, an English painter's son who once taught art history at the University of Kentucky and the University of Pittsburgh. He knocked the stuffiness out of the museum, installed single-line hanging instead of stacking paintings up the walls the old-fashioned way, and made the rooms flow in chronological order. He vastly enlarged the U.S. collection because U.S. art "was seriously underestimated abroad." ...Rothenstein, who was knighted in 1952, has fought hard for the Tate-once with his fists. At a bubbly art-show opening, his chief detractor, the waspish critic Douglas Cooper, taunted Rothenstein once too often, and the bespectacled, bantamweight director flattened him with one fat punch. Rothenstein has to buy paintings before they get expensive and safe, and the result is a rare reputation for a public gallery.
