Instead of cylinders and pistons, the Wankel engine has a single combustion chamber shaped like a fat-waisted figure eight (see diagram). Inside, it is a three-cornered rotor with curved sides. A shaft passes through the rotor and makes it move on an eccentric orbit by means of two gears. All three corners of the triangle stay in contact with the wall of the chamber at all times. To make the contacts gaslight, each corner is tipped with an inset metal strip that, as the drive shaft revolves, is pushed tight against the cavity's inner walls...
...whole engine is an ingenious exercise in mechanical geometry. As the rotor turns, its corners form three moving cavities that first increase in volume and then decrease. When a cavity, still small but growing, passes the intake port leading to the carburetor, it draws in fuel and air. Then the cavity decreases in volume, compressing the mixture. The engine's single spark plug fires; the exploding gas pushes the rotor and shaft. At the end of the power stroke, a corner of the rotor uncovers the exhaust port, and the burned gases are swept out of the engine. Meanwhile...
...rapidly developing country like Nigeria, we see some peculiar paradoxes. We saw one of these when the Action Group campaign helicopter landed on the road in front of our Mission compound here. The wind from the rotor almost tore the grass roof off a nearby house. It is probably the first time that "repair of grass roofs" might be listed as election expenses. The helicopter pilot mentioned that one disadvantage of the helicopter's use was the fact that it often attracted more attention than the campaign speech...
...announce. Calling in the press, he displayed (but did not demonstrate) a radical new internal combustion engine billed as the greatest advance since the diesel. It has no pistons or valves, only two moving parts; there is a carburetor to mix air and gasoline, a single spark plug, a rotor that drives the crankshaft. Beyond that. Hurley refused details. CW, he said, had developed the engine in conjunction with West Germany's NSU Werke, makers of autos and motorcycles, and had exclusive North American rights. In the works, said Hurley, was a whole string of models from...
...metal and the current applied, the metal is vaporized to the same shape as the electrode pattern. With this process the hardest metals have been shaped as easily as cast iron, and the machines are automatic, e.g., one ran unattended for 72 hours while it shaped a high-speed rotor for the Argonne atomic laboratory...
