...Mallory powder metallurgy. Already providing required balance in the nose of guided missiles, Mallory 1000 is twice as dense as steel or brass and far stronger than lead . . . actually outdoes nature in packing concentrated weight into the smallest possible space. As the pendulum in self-winding wrist watches, the rotor in gyroscopic control mechanisms, counterweights in airplane ailerons, and in dozens of other applications . . . this unique, man-made metal is another example of the way Mallory prepares for tomorrow's progress-today...

...planes and helicopters, and provided with an airborne television system and many a new transportation device-among them the "mechanical mule," a vehicle 27 inches high and weighing only 760 lbs., and the "flying platform," a one-man helicopter in which the pilot stands on a ledge over the rotor blades and guides the machine by hand levers...

...morning last week at an air field near St. Louis. Veteran Test Pilot John Noll warmed up the small Continental engine (less than 500 h.p.) behind his glass-enclosed "greenhouse"; two compressors began feeding air through tubes to small "pressure jets" at the tips of the three overhead rotor blades. As Noll opened the throttle, the fuel in the pods began burning in small, roaring jet gusts, expelling the hot air, spinning the rotor and lifting the aircraft off the ground. At 4,000 ft., ready for forward flight, Noll switched on the small pusher propeller, sited between the twin...

...convertiplane takes off with the rotor shafts vertical, and the rotors lift it into the air helicopter-fashion. Then the pilot tilts the rotors forward so that they begin to act like oversized airplane propellers. As the aircraft gains forward speed, its wing begins to contribute lift. When the rotors have been turned through 90° and are facing fully forward, all the lift comes from the wing, as in a standard airplane. The conversion in the Bell takes about 15 seconds and is said to be smooth and easy. Top speed in horizontal flight: more than 175 m.p.h...

Automatic Detective. An ultrasonic inspector of metal parts that follows instructions recorded on magnetic tape was put into operation by Sperry Products at General Motors Allison Division. Like a doctor with a stethoscope, "Simac" looks for defects in rotor forgings by automatically moving to specified checkpoints and "listening" to the metal. Price...
