...Cromartie High School, the first of five Japanese NYAFF movies I saw, is director Yudai Yamaguchi?s take on a teen delinquent genre that goes back at least to the 1955 Blackboard Jungle. The setting: a high school with such a rotten history that it has been destroyed (and rebuilt) six times. Seven may be the charm, since one of the students is a decent kid: our hero, Kamiyama (dishy Takamasa Suga). In the first reel, he writes a letter home: "Oh, mom I?m a bit confused. Everyone looks like a yakuza." That?s not quite fair...

...decision has taken me in the opposite direction. Let them do all the dirty work! Nigeria is an incredibly rich country, sitting on a lot of oil, and yet it has lived through a succession of dictators. All kinds of hyenas want to get their teeth into that rotten meat. There is no getting away from that. It's a licorice that these power children really cannot stop themselves licking. I am convinced that Nigeria would have been a more highly developed country without the oil. I wished we'd never smelled the fumes of petroleum. You spoke today...

...ferocious. In the first 15 of her 44 films, those made before she turned 40, Streep (who turns 57 this month) lost or gave up at least seven children, five husbands, one fiance, her life twice and her mind once. Since then, while her characters have had some rotten luck (cancer, house burned down by son), Streep has mostly played people taking charge of their own destiny, if not actual ballbusters. She has shot rapids, taught violin and had people murdered...

...garbage bag filled with rotten bananas came hurtling down the Weld hallway my freshman year in the grand finale to what I affectionately call “The Great Banana War.” I ducked, and thus ended the weeklong battle: from fresh bananas being hidden in the bed to a physical struggle for control of the banana bag, from the concealment of the bananas in a package as camouflage to a brief “water-being-poured-down-our-door” episode, and the much-maligned campaign, in which the rotten-banana-smeared cardboard left under...

...Price Isn't Right Re "Sweet 16 and Spoiled Rotten" [April 24]: I agree with columnist Ana Marie Cox that mtv's reality show My Super Sweet 16 verges on the nauseating. It is nearly unbearable to witness the whining of greedy teenage girls while their fathers cough up hundreds of thousands of dollars for a single party and a luxury automobile. After watching an episode with my rapt teenage daughter, I couldn't help asking, Is it any wonder the rest of the world hates us? Fern Galperin Stamford, Connecticut...
