Oliver North was set to appear in a Halloween parade with some local police in Vienna, Virginia, last week when he got word that followers of Lyndon LaRouche, dean of the American political fringe and Virginia resident, might ambush him along the way with a salvo of rotten fruit. "What do we do?" North asked an adviser, Mark Goodin. "Be sure and duck," Goodin replied...

...preserving the small banana farm, which is the sole source of support for many laid-back islanders. Normally well-behaved people on both sides of the issue have been insulting each other's bananas through at least two different rounds of GATT talks, calling the rival bananas "skinny," "tasteless," "rotten" and "easily bruised." Both GATT panels have ruled that the banana quota system is a restraint of trade, but that hasn't stopped the friends of the quotas. They have been working frantically behind the scenes, offering South American countries various financial inducements to get them to switch positions. Meanwhile...

The series, called Rebel Highway, is premiering a movie a week each Friday through Sept. 16. Taken together, this seamy decalogue shows the '50s as a neat place to visit -- a lovers' lane accessible from a killer drag strip -- but hell to live through. Each movie revives the battles between tough guys and sweet chicks; each recalls hot sex before...

...While the theater was not exactly inundated with people and the plot of the movie stank like rotten eggs, I was pleased with the performances of Chris Farley and Adam Sandler. Both Saturday Night Live regulars made the movie bearable and actually pretty funny at times. In one scene Farley rips an earring off a rebel rocker and, well, let's just say the earring was not attached to the metalhead's ear. Sandler was charming with his portrayal of a stupid drummer for the Lone Rangers band. Much unlike Sandler, Brendan Fraser ("School Ties" and "With Honors") is pathetic...
