Deep Grudge. Born to a wealthy Rotterdam family, Menten first became interested in Poland through his father's business connections there. The son, in turn, developed an extensive export trade in Dutch products to Poland. Menten moved in 1923 to East Galicia (then in Poland, now part of the U.S.S.R.'s Ukraine), where he became a prosperous landowner and businessman. He was mild-mannered and quiet, but developed a deep grudge against a prominent neighboring Jewish family over a business dispute. Orchestra and chorus are fully integrated in a crystalline performance of this seven-part choral work by a romantic Frenchman who admired classic Greek proportion. ...both the Boston and San Francisco symphony orchestras, but will give up the latter next season. Last week San Francisco named his successor. He is Holland's Edo de Waart, 34, the orchestra's current principal guest conductor and, since 1967, conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic. Like Ozawa, De Waart has charm, good looks and lots of hair. He also has the reputation of a solid all-round conductor whose Bartok is as educated as his Mozart.
