German Expressionism, though a "movement" that lasted only fifteen years (1905-1920) consisted of two such steps. Died. Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, 91, a founder of the German expressionist school of painting; in West Berlin. In 1905 Schmidt-Rottluff joined with several other rebelling art students to form a group known as die Brticke (the Bridge) and to search for an art form and sensibility to replace impressionism. Their solution: primary colors laid side by side on the canvas in powerful forms.
