...proud, aristocratic and essentially clueless woman (Nicole Kidman) inherits a failing cattle ranch in Australia's outback. She meets a roughneck drover (Hugh Jackman) with whom she falls into that mutual dislike which, in movies like Australia, is always True Love's necessary precursor. They begin sparking on the adventurous cattle drive that is required to save the old homestead from their rich and avaricious neighbors. She also inherits Nullah (Brandon Walters), an adorable child of mixed white and aboriginal blood, who needs her love but also needs the mystical wisdom of his grandfather (David Gulpilil), a sort of shaman...
...Alaskan tough, so not only does a thing like teen pregnancy not seem like anyone's damn business, but it's also not seen as the calamity that so many people in the lower 48 states might think it is. This is dangerous country - it's not just the roughneck jobs on cable reality shows. It's real life here. I listened to the absolutely heartbreaking story of how the godfather of Track Palin, Sarah's oldest son, died in a small plane crash just minutes after having dropped off four kids. Another family invited me into their home...
...growing number of Jamaican citizens and officials, in fact, are counting on their world-conquering young sprinters - none of whom has failed a drug test, and who often speak out against the gunplay at home - to supplant self-styled "roughneck" singers as role models, and help reduce the country's horrific levels of violent crime. "We can't wait for them to come home...
With his belly hiding his belt, with his red suspenders and white beard, Glen Parshall is a dead ringer for Santa Claus, except for the snub-nosed pistol he keeps tucked in his back pocket. Parshall spends his days behind the gun cage of Bargain Pawn, in a roughneck North Las Vegas neighborhood littered with homeless encampments, Catholic charities and pawnshops. It's no Bellagio. But he is a gentle man who treats his customers with respect, whether hoodlum or homeowner. He knows everything there is to know about weapons and is a stickler for the byzantine rules...
...Indeed, it seems to me the film works better as a comic love story than it does as a sports epic. In its early moments, it features some good, roughneck, on-field shenanigans. The players are simple jocks, content with playing a game of few, loosely enforced rules. But as attention shifts from locker rooms to board rooms, where the real struggle for control of the game's bright, yet much more respectable, future is waged, Leatherheads loses some of its formerly merry ways. It wants to make the case that there is more fun - maybe more simple humanity...
