Every show has two settings, the one onstage and one in the society that exists behind it. Pins and Needles, at Manhattan's Roundabout Theater, is almost 41 years old; the first line of its first number is "Sing me a song of social significance." But the difference between what was socially significant in 1937 and in 1978 is so ironically perceptible as to cripple some of the numbers while endowing others with brand-new satirical bite...
Needless to say, Castle's decision tugs at our sympathy, and several reviewers have speculated that Greene means through this novel to justify in a roundabout way the defection in the '60s of his good friend, Kim Philby. But if we take Castle's side, it is largely because the British superiors he defies in the book come off as such cardboard villains. "Uncle Remus," conceivable even now, is done here too baldly to be believed. That's what Bogdanovich does: "Orson said to me yesterday...I asked Orson what he thought and you know Orson...
...Salonika or Piraeus for transshipment are placed in sealed warehouses and are not liable to inspection. Some shipments intended for the Palestinians in Lebanon originate in Arab countries. Packed in cases that often identify the contents as fish or an equally harmless commodity, the weapons are shipped in roundabout ways, like from Benghazi to Hamburg to Athens, to avoid interception by Israeli patrol boats. Other weapons come from international arms merchants, who routinely sell to the highest bidder. A third major source is Eastern Europe, which acts as arms supplier to Soviet-backed parties in the Middle East. The recipients...
