...past half-century has been dominated by leaders who were as controversial as they were charismatic: Mahatma Gandhi, Mohammed AH Jinnah, Jawaharlal Nehru. Another name now seems likely to join that list: Sheik Mujibur ("Mujib") Rahman, the President of Bangladesh. To his critics, Mujib is a vituperative, untrustworthy rabble-rouser. To most of the people of his new nation, he is a patriot-hero whose imprisonment by West Pakistan has only enhanced his appeal. "He was a great man before," says one Bangladesh official, "but those bastards have made him even greater...

Somewhat more consistent with the Gospels is the view of Caiaphas and other Jewish high priests, who regard Jesus partly as a heretic but mainly as a rabble-rouser who threatens to bring down the full weight of Rome upon occupied Palestine. Jewish groups who protest that Superstar is anti-Jewish because it makes the high priests meaner and more bloody-minded than they are in the Gospels may have a point. But they have missed the contemporary echoes that Superstar trades on with audiences likely to know little of the Bible and less of history. The high priests...

...Rabble-Rouser Abbie Hoffman had to borrow $25,000 and publish it himself. Newspapers refuse to advertise it and most bookstores won't stock it-possibly because storekeepers fear people might take too literally the title of Hoffman's latest opus, Steal This Book. Frustrated at every turn, the Yippie leader last week set up shop on the sidewalk outside one of Manhattan's bookshops and began hawking the book, which offers practical instruction in gypping telephone companies, mixing Molotov cocktails and sowing pot seed. Sure enough, more people stole than bought. After disposing of 50 copies...

...scenario is straight out of the Late Late Show. It is the kind of rah-rah rouser that might have starred Pat O'Brien as the coach and Ronald Reagan as Saturday's hero. Yet it all happened-all, that is, except the finale. Last week Jim Plunkett of Stanford University won the Heisman Trophy by a large margin. But the climax of his college career will not come until New Year's Day, when he will lead the Indians to their first Rose Bowl in 18 years. Stanford will meet unbeaten Ohio State in a classic...

...show was then redesigned to Gleason's order. The title song, originally a ballad for Richard, was changed to a superfluous (if nice) rouser that Gleason could handle. A weak director was hired and the libretto's somber tinge was submerged in fireworks. The show ran for a year, but had another producer (such as Hal Prince, whose West Side Story had revolutionized the Broadway musical the year before) besides Merrick done it. Take Me Along's life would surely have been much longer. (It is interesting to note that co-author Stein went on to write two great serious...
