...their 10 years together, Rob and Nick have not entirely left their mainstream roots; they have become favorites of the advertising world--with commissions from Absolut Vodka and Land Rover--and the celeb set, selling their work to Elton John, David Beckham and other boldface names. The pair's next project: portraits--shot with an 886-lens camera of their own design. In this partnership, the future is light...

...NASA's rover missions did not use rockets to cushion their landings - the spacecraft were protected by giant airbags and bounced their way to a stop on the surface. The Phoenix is the first spacecraft in 32 years to gently settle on Mars, using 12 descent engines reminiscent of techniques pioneered by the Viking probes in the 1970s. NASA says the craft is safely resting on its three pads, tilted by only one-quarter of a degree. "In my dreams it couldn't have gone as perfectly," said Barry Goldstein, Phoenix project manager...

...Little wonder then, that when Tata Motors, one of India's biggest car companies, agreed to buy prestige British brands Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford three weeks ago, there were cheers in both India and Britain. For too long, Jag's American owners relied on the company's heritage to sell more cars, releasing model after model largely based on the classic Jaguar look that dates back to 1968. Though Ford never broke out separate results for Jaguar and Land Rover, analysts believe the former lost at least $10 billion over the past decade or so (Land Rover has been in good health the past few years and made an estimated $1 billion in 2007). Tata is buying Jaguar just as the company has finally broken its repetitive mold and released...

...carmakers heavily reliant on the American market. As an apparent recession kicks in, sales of all luxury cars in the U.S. are starting to tumble. And the weak dollar doesn't help matters either. So look for Tata to try to open up emerging markets for Jaguar and Land Rover across Asia and Russia. "There's certainly room to do that," Wormald says. "But it will take an awful lot of time and money." Still, as gambles go, Tata's seems more likely to reap the payoff that eluded Ford...
