Moreover, the CRIMSON states editorially that Friday's demonstration with its rowdyism is a testimonial to the uselessness of emotional appeals. Instead of making emotional appeals the speakers warned against mob hysteria and emphasized the need for clear and cool-headed thinking. The CRIMSON concedes that pacifistic groups should organize and be enthusiastic. How is it to be done without holding public meetings when one hasn't the money for claborate publicity campaigns and printing? Why haven't pacifists the right to demand police protection if necessary to insure that their meetings shall be as dignified and orderly...
Yesterday's demonstration against war staged by the National Student's League and the resulting display of rowdyism and horseplay is an obvious testimonial to the uselessness of emotional demonstrations to end war. Far from displaying the spirit the National Student's League hoped to inspire, the mob of students that milled around Widener steps heckled the speakers and applauded the successful attempt of certain interlopers...
Hospitalized in Honolulu last week were two Army aviators who had been badly beaten in what military authorities feared might be a fresh outbreak of rowdyism by Hawaiian natives. Lieutenants LeRoy Hudson and Walter S. Lee were out motoring with two women one evening when another car was slewed across the road in front of them. Getting out to investigate, the officers were set upon by four Hawaiians. The women raced to a nearby house for aid, returned to find the lieutenants lying unconscious on the banks of the Mawai Canal, not far from where Mrs. Thalia Fortescue Massie...
...City College is busy meting out discipline because a crowd of pacifist students blocked the path of the president--and of course the inevitable "distinguished visitors"--on the way to review a drill by the Reserve Officers' Training Corps. Certainly some of the City College students were guilty of rowdyism, but the cure for that scarcely lies in chastisement with a presidential umbrella. The Board of Education was equally unhappy in its strategy. Its fairness in dismissing a teacher had been questioned by a large number of his fellows. He had been dismissed allegedly for incompetence and falsifying his attendance...
...Holiday Association's activity was Sioux City where a strike began fortnight ago. More than 2,000 farmers picketed the seven highways into town. Produce trucks were turned back by logs and cables across the road, nails in boards, sticks and stones, strong language. There was some rowdyism but no real violence. Sixty armed deputies patrolled the roads to preserve peace. Most nonstriking farmers were persuaded to retreat peacefully; a few succeeded in rushing the blockade. Two freight trains were temporarily held up. Most of Sioux City lived out of cans. But the Holiday failed to up prices...
