Since coming to Harvard, I've often joked with friends that I couldn't possibly get by with any less than six hours of sleep every night. Tales of students with the ability to pull one or even two all-nighters in a row continue to amaze me. Yet Jonathan Coe's The House of Sleep puts even these feats of slumber to shame; insomnia, somnambulism and narcolepsy are among the much more serious disorders with which his characters are attempting to come to terms. Admittedly, Dartboard was running late. But if the doors had been open, we would have been sitting in our favorite row in Emerson 210 on time. With the doors locked, Dartboard was left banging on glass, unheard and unaided. We then had to rush around to the side door and dash up the stairs, only to arrive into the distinctive midterm silence of pen on paper. And we apologize--after our minor ordeal, Dartboard had to trample over two poor souls in order to get to the room's one remaining seat. Next time we'll be hours early...
Most of the inmates at Suffolk Country House of Corrections were convicted of crimes involving substance abuse. While some prisoners have committed violent crimes, they can only stay at Suffolk if their sentence is two years or under, which obviously excludes rapists and murderers. A row of classrooms, the setting for tutors in the prison, is very comfortable. There are no screens or bars between tutor and tutee; we sit at desks very similar to those in our lecture halls. Guards periodically roam the halls to check on the safety of the tutors...
