The smaller lock will be suitable for launches and row boats. Eight sluices will be provided, and in emergencies the smaller lock will be used as a flood-sluice for letting water out of the basin. Four Freshman crews rowed yesterday over a course of a mile and a half upstream from the Newell Boat Club. The crews are not yet well developed as there is much new material to be tried out. Stationary seats are being used and the crews are not graded in any way, the orders being changed from day to day. The men who do not get a chance to row on the river in the afternoon will be given work on the machines in the boat-house. Vail and Rice are coaching...

...general plans for the development of the University crew which will row against Yale next June have just been completed by Captain Filley. According to this arrangement, the trial-eights squad, selected last week from the crews which took part in the interclub races, will continue to row during the remainder of this fall as long as the river keeps open. This squad is composed, as far as can be seen at present, of the best oarsmen in the University, excluding former University crew members, but promising men will be added from time to time as seems advisable...
