...players who knew of him only as a legend and who wondered if he had been left behind by the game. Wilkinson quickly banished fears that he was obsolete, as I knew he would. College coaches around the country - Bear Bryant of Alabama, Duffy Daugherty of Michigan State, Darrell Royal of Texas - used to call him on Monday morning to talk over the glory and the agony of the previous Saturday afternoon. Wilkinson had also conducted coaching clinics with Daugherty, and he had been ABC'S expert TV commentator on college football from 1965 to 1976. He had kept...

...arbitrary plot about a chef murderer hops from place to place on the slightest whim. It is little more than an excuse for cameo appearances by top European actors (Philippe Noiret, Jean-Pierre Cassel, Jean Rochefort) and restaurants (Paris' Tour d' Argent, London's Café Royal). The settings are sumptuously photographed by John Alcott (Barry Lyndon), but Ted Kotcheff s direction is lifeless. Were it not for the creepy musical score and endless interrogation scenes, it would be difficult to tell that Chefs is a suspense drama...

For Brook it is a daring choice, his first production with the Royal Shakespeare Company since 1970, when he made A Midsummer Night's Dream into a clever circus fantasy all his own. Aware of the public relations value of the visit, the Japanese gave a royal welcome to the Americans, whose trip was paid for entirely by Washington. Premier Takeo Fukuda popped in at two receptions in Tokyo and even conversed with Kreps and others in English, a language he almost never uses in public. Japan's aggressive MITI (Ministry of International Trade) and the big trading houses had arranged for the visitors more than 3,000 interviews with potential buyers, and a few sales had been prudently lined up ahead of time. When Mrs. Kreps criticized Japan's reluctance...

Puccini: La Fanciulla del West (Soprano Carol Neblett, Tenor Placido Domingo, Baritone Sherrill Milnes; Chorus and Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Zubin Mehta, conductor; Deutsche Grammophon; 3 LPs). Fanciulla (1910) is a second-rate Italian opera comically posing as a shoot-'em-up thriller. Neblett makes a dramatic frontier heroine. Domingo, as her lover, sings everyone else under the bar, and Milnes is dashingly villainous. With Mehta in the saddle, chorus and orchestra ride smartly home...
