French Socialist Ségolène Royal scored high enough marks as a presidential candidate in 2007 to finish second in the race, with 17 million votes. These days, her grades - and her ability to get on with her political colleagues - have slipped. In a new book set for publication Feb. 5, Royal not only belittles her victorious rival, President Nicolas Sarkozy, as a greedy, vain, amoral "little boy happy to be surrounded by his toys," she also takes swipes with similar venom at fellow Socialist Party heavyweights. Oddly enough, Royal appears to hope that the book's belligerent...

...collection of interviews, titled Femme Debout (Standing Woman), is expected to fly off bookshelves when it hits stores Thursday. As the title suggests, the book seeks to dispel any suspicion that a series of setbacks Royal has suffered since her May 2007 loss to Sarkozy has weakened in any way her bid for another run in 2012. In addition to the jabs at those she feels are conspiring to block her path, Royal also punctuates the book's pages with the boundless self-confidence that has proven both an asset and a liability to her over time. Built in 1737, the HMS Victory (a later version would be commanded by Admiral Nelson) was, in its day, the most powerful warship in the Royal Navy. In 1744, it was part of the fleet, commanded by war hero Admiral John Balchin, that broke through a French blockade of the Tagus river at Lisbon. Returning to England, a fierce storm hit the fleet, first separating the Victory from the other ships, and then sinking it, reportedly near the Channel Islands. The 1,100 sailors on board, as well as the sons of some of Britain's most prestigious families...

...week. The new speaker, San Antonio Republican Joe Straus, is a moderate scion of an old Republican family with ties going back to John Tower and George H.W. Bush. The Straus victory is evidence of a shift in the GOP power base as urban voters gain a larger voice. Royal Masset, a longtime Texas Republican analyst, says the GOP will continue to fare well in Texas, but he sees a new polarity in the state as the old conservative/liberal labels often used to define Texas politics give way to the emerging urban/rural dichotomy...

...spent most of his career designing ugly creatures for movies like this and written by a stuntman (Danny McBride), you can expect it to be heavier on the action scenes than on character elucidation. The Brit cast attempts to camouflage the silliness by swanning it up, as if the Royal Shakespeare Company had gotten communally drunk and staged an impromptu production of Dracula Meets the Wolfman. Sheen tries bravely to keep a straight face, especially during his love scenes with Mitra, a TV grad (Party of Five, Gideon's Crossing, The Practice, Boston Legal, Nip/Tuck) who looks like the spawn...
