Montreal's greatest attraction remains its inner cityscape. Though it is a largely French-speaking metropolis of almost 3.5 million (nearly everyone speaks at least a little English), its core is easy to explore on foot. Visitors inevitably are drawn downtown, the heart of which is Rue Sainte-Catherine and the dozens of streets that radiate from it. In the winter the entire district is accessible through a 19-mile grid of underground passages and atriums known as the underground city. The nearby and stately Rue Sherbrooke is also worth checking out, especially from around high-end Rue Crescent...
...earthier taste of Montreal, head to Boulevard Saint-Laurent, where the street's character has been forged like a pearl out of constant friction between generations of immigrants, poets, nihilists, students and most recently the inevitable yuppies. The funkiest part, between Rue Sherbrooke and Rue des Pins, is filled with a pungent mix of great restaurants, cafes, food stores, nightclubs and local-designer clothing shops. Labor, under leader Kevin Rudd, is running sites like kevin07.com.au, where voters can blog views...
...Trickling down the rue Saint-Honoré, down the street from her couture school, Kim found herself drawn to the famed Paris boutique Colette—and in particular, to their sophisticated collection of graphic T-shirts. Perhaps the rugged hipster appeal of an “I ;-) Paris” T-shirt (a Colette staple) didn’t necessarily cater to her interests, but it planted a seed of designs yet to come...
...stage (he won a Tony for Best Actor in A Delicate Balance) doesn't translate to mass fame as it once did. But whether you saw him as an oilman in Comes a Horseman with Jane Fonda, as an imperious lawyer on Law and Order or the ghost of Rue McClanahan's husband (a recurring role!) on The Golden Girls, you knew that that actor was those people. As Andre Bishop told the Los Angeles Times, "What was remarkable about his acting was he didn't seem to be acting at all. There was no sense of effort or strain...
