When a second building threatened to break ranks, Owings took a different tack. Developer Jerry Wolman planned to jut a commercial building onto the generous sidewalk area. Owings explained that this would ruin the grand effect, like a shoe protruding from under a curtain. Wolman finally agreed to change the building. Owings flew to Boston with Wolman to arrange the new financing, then back to the capital to get the developer a zoning variance to add an extra floor. A lot of effort, but the grand design for the avenue was kept intact...
Another Arab invasion? Hardly. The emergency was an attempt by Reform Jews to hold a worship service with men and women praying together at the sacred Wailing Wall, the only remaining ruin of Judaism's Second Temple. Harvard students have always been able to cope with outside pressures well. They can find ways out." (And they have too. They see their friendly local doctor or shrink...
...notes with wry pride: "I am the only candidate opposed by both big business and big labor." Many foreign diplomats, especially Asians, fear that he might lead the U.S. back to isolationism. Orthodox politicians often cannot forgive his hauteur, and recoil at what seems to be his rule-or-ruin approach. He is unpredictable, uncontrollable. Would he attack agricultural subsidies? Farm groups wonder. How far beyond Medicare would he go in expanding Government medical services? Organized medicine worries. He speaks for tax reform and attacks the oil-depletion allowance, as others have for years, but Bobby might just be tough...
