Shored Against Ruin. Mrs. Valerie Eliot, the poet's widow, was given photographic copies of all the documents by the library, and she gave Yale Scholar Donald Gallup exclusive access to them. In the 20 hours available to him, Gallup produced several pages of detailed notes for the Times Literary Supplement, plus four illustrations photographed from the text. Of 57 sheets in the original Waste Land, 42 were unused; it is impossible at this stage to assess how much Ole Ez (as Pound liked to sign himself to friends) cut out, and to what extent Eliot...

...scene is the "recent future" in Bonn, a time of Britain's critical attempt to negotiate her way into the Common Market. Leo Harting, a minor official in the British embassy, has disappeared with secret files that could ruin the negotiations. Alan Turner, a counterespionage agent reminiscent of the half-burnt-out, seedy Alec Leamas of The Spy Who Came In from the Cold, has been sent from London to find Harting and recapture the missing documents. So far, a familiar situation. But Turner's main antagonists are not foreign spies; they are the British embassy officials themselves...

This division into classes, together with the possible violence which makes dealers keep knives, the possible exploitation that can ruin the naive, and the lack of hospitality from Boston police, is probably causing the dwindling of Boston's hippie population, evident after the riots on the Common, before the summer season should have ended. Right now, in the fall, people still gather outside on the Charles St. sidewalks to talk and sell, but the winter will come soon, and the hippies will largely vanish. You wonder if they will come back...
